Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport to add 100 CNG, electric buses to its fleet | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Navi Mumbai: The Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport (NMMT) proposed to induct 200 CNG and electric buses into its public transport network under the Green Fleet initiative this year in Navi Mumbai. With 150 CNG and electric buses already in its possession while doing away with the diesel-run buses, NMMT planned to procure 100 more CNG and electric buses on its own, for which a budgetary allocation was provisioned in the current fiscal. NMMT also sent a proposal to the Centre to procure another 100 electric buses under the Pradhan Mantri E-Bus Seva Yojana. While preparing the annual transport budget, the civic body allocated an estimated Rs 652 crore for procuring eco-friendly new buses and developing more bus termini, installing solar systems for energy sustainability, and setting up electric vehicle charging stations, among other measures. A civic official said it was a surplus budget for the fiscal 2026-27 and expenditure came to Rs 651.9 crore. The budget surplus was around Rs 10 lakh, which was equivalent to last year.A civic official said that, maintaining social commitment, various concessions would continue for students, senior citizens and women in the Navi Mumbai area for travel in public transport buses. It was proposed to develop the bus termini on a commercial basis and achieve savings in electricity costs through solar power projects. To increase the use of environmentally friendly electric vehicles, charging facilities would be provided at 10 locations on a Public Private Partnership basis at the Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation vehicle base. Starting a new bus route was on the cards due to the opening of the new airport and increasing commuter volume. “Considering the increasing demand for buses due to the Navi Mumbai International Airport, new bus routes will be launched to increase revenue in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. State-of-the-art ITMS System, timely and prompt service will be provided through proper planning and management of traffic,” said an official.
