Navi Mumbai: 2 naturalists capture fan-throated lizard | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Navi Mumbai: Two Navi Mumbai residents, Pradeep Choudhary and Madhav Athwale, photographed a fan throated lizard at the Chalkewadi Plateau, Satara, early this month. The fan-throated lizard is a striking reptile known for its vibrant, fan-like extension of skin on its throat, used for display during mating rituals, territorial disputes, warding off rivals and cooling down their body temperature. Only the male lizard displays their colourful fan throat, which they blow intermittently. The duo travelled around 250 km to click the photographs for two successive days. They spent five hours daily to capture the lizard on their lenses. Pradeep Choudhary said, “These lizards are not easy to spot as they camouflage with sand. Only those who know about them are able to locate them.”
