Tight police vigil in Askarwadi after Friday violence | Pune News – The Times of India

Pune: The Pune rural police maintained a high vigil in the Askarwadi area and nearby villages on Sunday afternoon and evening following the violence reported on Friday evening.“We are maintaining a vigil in the area and do not want any further trouble,” said superintendent of police (Pune Rural) Sandeep Singh Gill.A group of 14 men from Kondhwa had gone to the Askarwadi lakeside on Friday evening to break their Ramzan fast when a group of 100 to 150 men allegedly attacked them and told them to leave the spot immediately. The attackers also objected to the victims’ attire and allegedly assaulted them with sticks, whips and sharp weapons.“We have deployed bandobast in the Askarwadi area and nearby villages where people from Kondhwa visit to break their fast. As it was Sunday, many people from Kondhwa started arriving in the Bopdev Ghat area and adjoining villages to break their fast, so we maintained tight security in these villages,” inspector Kumar Kadam of the Saswad police said. The police said no untoward incidents were reported on Sunday. When asked whether any suspects had been arrested or detained, Kadam said, “On Saturday and Sunday, we called some local villagers whose descriptions matched those of the suspects and asked the injured persons to identify them. However, the injured persons told the police that none of them was involved in the assault.”
