This actor turned down ₹2000 crore role in the world’s highest-grossing film – Here’s why | English Movie News – Times of India

Scheduling conflicts or creative differences often lead actors to turn down roles, unaware of how iconic those projects might become. One such instance involved Matt Damon, a celebrated actor known for delivering numerous blockbusters. Damon famously declined a role in James Cameron‘s Avatar, the film that later became the highest-grossing movie of all time. Matt Damon was offered an astonishing 10% share of the total box office collection for James Cameron’s ‘Avatar’.
However, he had to decline the role due to prior commitments, a decision that has since become one of Hollywood’s most famous missed opportunities. Avatar went on to become the highest-grossing film in history, making Damon’s choice a subject of much speculation and humor. Reflecting on it, Damon has candidly acknowledged the massive financial loss but remains proud of his career choices. Despite missing out on this monumental film, Damon continues to shine as one of Hollywood’s most versatile and respected actors.
Matt Damon, the acclaimed American actor, producer, and screenwriter, has delivered stellar performances in numerous successful films, including the Oscar-winning Good Will Hunting (1997) and the critically acclaimed Oppenheimer (2023). As reported by GQ, Matt was offered a role with a 10% share of the film’s box office earnings. With Avatar grossing $3 billion (over ₹25,000 crore in today’s value) worldwide, Damon could have earned an astonishing $250 million (approximately ₹2,000 crore). Surprisingly, his decision to decline the offer wasn’t due to a conflict with director James Cameron but stemmed from prior work commitments. At the time, Damon was dedicated to another project in the Bourne franchise, which led him to pass on what could have been one of the most lucrative roles in cinematic history.
The actor has portrayed the iconic spy Jason Bourne in four films of the Bourne series (2002–2016). Among his highest-grossing films are Elysium (2013) and The Martian (2015). In The Martian, Damon played a stranded botanist on Mars, earning over $630 million worldwide, making it his highest-grossing lead role. For this performance, he received an Oscar nomination and won the Golden Globe Award for Best Actor. He also appeared in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar (2014), which grossed over $670 million, albeit in a supporting role. Most recently, Damon delivered another acclaimed performance in Nolan’s award-winning blockbuster Oppenheimer.
