Tabla maestro Zakir Hussain has been admitted to a hospital in the US for serious health issues. An update about his condition was shared on social media.
According to a PTI report, Zakir Hussain has been admitted to the ICU after experiencing heart-related issues. His friend, flautist Rakesh Chaurasia, confirmed this to the news agency on Sunday.
A source close to Zakir Hussain revealed that the 73-year-old US-based musician had been dealing with blood pressure issues.
Rakesh Chaurasia informed PTI that Zakir Hussain has been in a San Francisco hospital for a heart-related issue for the past week. He mentioned that Zakir is currently unwell and in the ICU, and everyone is concerned about his condition.
Zakir Hussain, son of the legendary tabla maestro Ustad Alla Rakha Khan, is a renowned figure in both Indian and global music. He began playing the tabla at the age of seven and was performing across India by 12. Over the years, he has made significant contributions to Indian classical and world music.
Zakir Hussain has composed and performed for many renowned Indian and international films, showcasing his unmatched tabla skills. Around four decades ago, he moved to San Francisco with his family, where he has continued to make significant contributions to the global music scene.
Zakir Hussain has earned numerous national and international accolades throughout his illustrious career. The Government of India has awarded him prestigious civilian honors, including the Padma Shri in 1988, Padma Bhushan in 2002, and Padma Vibhushan in 2023. In 1990, he was honored with the Sangeet Natak Akademi Award, India’s highest music recognition.
Zakir Hussain’s collaborative project, the Global Drum Project, won a Grammy Award in 2009 for Best Contemporary World Music Album at the 51st Grammy Awards. He has been nominated for the Grammy Awards seven times and has won four of them.
