Shah made headlines around the world when he filed a lawsuit against Netflix and ‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong-hyuk, alleging that the series ‘copied’ his Bollywood movie. According to legal documents obtained by TMZ, Shah claimed that his film ‘Luck’, starring Sanjay Dutt, Imran Khan, and Shruti Haasan, centred around a group of people playing deadly games in hopes of winning a jackpot.With each player’s death, the prize money increases—an element which Shah claims bears striking resemblance to the plot of the hit Korean web series.
However, ‘Squid Game’ fans are clapping back, with some already declaring “‘They’re not gonna win that lawsuit.”
Social media has been abuzz with fans defending ‘Squid Game’ that sees hundreds of desperate contestants participating in children’s games for a tempting prize, but with deadly stakes. Taking to social media handles, fans defended the K-drama series, expressing their disbelief over the allegations. One said, “I highly doubt they ripped an Indian Movie lol.”
Another defended the web series saying, “The creator of squid games literally had the idea for years, he even tried to get it to become a show decades ago but they didn’t think it would be good enough. No way at all did they steal it from India”
Others argued that the concept of ‘survival games’ was not unique to either ‘Luck’ or ‘Squid Game’, and has been a recurring theme in films and shows for years. A fan commented, “The concept of death games has existed for ages. Squid Game just took it to a whole new level.”
In his lawsuit, Shah claims that both ‘Luck’ and ‘Squid Game’ share similar plots, however, fans quickly dismissed these similarities as superficial. One user wrote, “I can’t see it flying. Yes, both are based on death games for money, which isn’t a new idea at all.”
“Luck is about putting lucky people in luck based death games. Where Squid Games is about putting desperate people in a Death Game for the entertainment of the immoral rich,” the tweet added.
Still another explained, “The narrative of wealthy onlookers gambling on the contestants and the death participants leading to a spike in the prize money are subplots reportedly seen in Luck as well as in Squid Game.”
Netflix has already denied the plagiarism allegations, stating, “This claim has no merit. ‘Squid Game’ was created and written by Hwang Dong-hyuk, and we intend to defend this matter vigorously.”
In his suit, Shah also alleged that his movie ‘Luck’ was released in theatres in India, UK, US, and the UAE, in July 2009 and claimed that Hwang Dong-hyuk also stated that he wrote ‘Squid Game’ that same year.
Meanwhile, some fans asked why Shah waited so long to file his lawsuit. His suit comes exactly 3 years after the film hit screens on 17 September 2021. “I wonder why he didn’t do it sooner…” one asked in a tweet, while another “Bro they waited till season 2. So why is it a problem now?”
Some others worried about the possibility of Season 2 of the hit series getting delayed over the legal drama saying, “Sue after season 2 release. We need to watch that sequel first.”
As the legal battle looms, ‘Squid Game’ enthusiasts expressed their confidence that the show will prevail, with many believing that the lawsuit won’t hold up in court. Others took a jibe at Bollywood movies allegedly cpying content from Hollywood films. “The irony of this headline! Indians have been copying Hollywood and foreign films forever,” read a comment.
Another said, “There are hundreds of movies where Bollywood copies numerous Hollywood movies.”
“Bollywood should sit down cause if Hollywood starts suing them for a thousands of movies they copied they will go bankrupt,” remarked another.
Netflix and Hwang Dong-hyuk are expected to contest the claims, with the case potentially setting the stage for a complex legal battle.
