National Herald case: Sonia Gandhi is at the Enforcement Directorate office

New Delhi:
Congress chief Sonia Gandhi was questioned for six hours today by the Enforcement Directorate in an alleged money laundering case connected to the National Herald newspaper. She has been summoned again tomorrow for Round 3 of questioning.

Here’s your 10-point cheatsheet to this big story:

  1. She came to the probe agency’s office accompanied by her son Rahul Gandhi and daughter Priyanka Gandhi Vadra at 11 am. After questioning started, Rahul Gandhi led a march of Congress MPs from parliament to the Rashtrapati Bhawan in protest against alleged misuse of central agencies to target opposition leaders.

  2. Priyanka Gandhi sat in another room at the Enforcement Directorate office with medicines for her 75-year-old mother, in case she needed medical assistance, sources have said.

  3. The questioning and recording of Sonia Gandhi’s statement began at 11:15 am after she completed the paperwork, including summons verification and signing on the attendance sheet.

  4. All COVID-19 safety rules were followed, officials said, adding two doctors and an ambulance remained on standby.

  5. The police have deployed a huge force and barricaded the entire 1-km stretch between her home and the Enforcement Directorate’s office in central Delhi’s Vidyut Lane.

  6. The central probe agency on Friday last week issued fresh summons to the Congress chief to join the investigation into the National Herald case by Monday. It was later deferred by a day.

  7. Sonia Gandhi was last questioned by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday for nearly two hours, amid strong protests by Congress leaders alleging vendetta politics by the BJP-ruled central government. Then too Priyanka Gandhi Vadra had accompanied her mother to the probe agency’s Delhi office.

  8. Sonia Gandhi was asked over two dozen questions in the last sitting at the Enforcement Directorate office.

  9. The questioning is linked with alleged financial irregularities in the Congress-promoted Young Indian Private Ltd, which owns National Herald newspaper.

  10. Rahul Gandhi was also questioned by the probe agency in the same case last month for over 50 hours spready across five days.
