Renowned French-Danish actor, director, and writer Niels Arestrup, celebrated for his César-winning roles in The Beat That My Heart Skipped and A Prophet, has died at the age of 75. Arestrup passed away at his home near Paris, as confirmed by his wife, actress and screenwriter Isabelle Le Nouvel, on Sunday.
Arestrup’s illustrious career was marked by a record three César Awards, the pinnacle of French cinema accolades. His final César came for Bertrand Tavernier’s political satire The French Minister (Quai d’Orsay). Born to a French mother from Brittany and a Danish father, Arestrup grew up in modest circumstances in Paris. After an unorthodox path that included odd jobs and dropping out of high school, he discovered his passion for acting, beginning with television and theatre.
In A Prophet, one of his most iconic roles, Arestrup played César Luciani, a fearsome Corsican mobster who draws the protagonist, Malik (Tahar Rahim), into a web of crime in exchange for protection. His nuanced performance received widespread critical acclaim.
Beyond cinema, Arestrup’s career highlights included his portrayal of General Dietrich von Choltitz in Volker Schlöndorff’s Diplomacy, a gripping narrative about saving Paris during World War II. More recently, he appeared in acclaimed French TV dramas such as Ziad Doueiri’s Baron Noir and Les Papillons Noirs.
Arestrup also held theatre close to his heart, winning a Molière Award in 2019 for his performance in John Logan’s Red, a play about the artist Mark Rothko.
