Kiran Rao‘s directorial ‘Laapataa Ladies‘ has been announced as India’s official entry for the 2025 Oscars in the Foreign Film category, according to the Film Federation of India. Chairman Jahnu Barua revealed the news, highlighting that the film was selected from a pool of nominations, which included 12 Hindi films, 6 Tamil films, 4 Malayalam films, 2 Marathi films, 3 Telugu films and 1 Odia film.
Kiran, the director of the film, shared her excitement in a statement, saying, “I am deeply honored and beyond delighted that our film ‘Laapataa Ladies’ has been chosen as India’s official entry to the Academy Awards.This recognition is a testament to the tireless work of my entire team, whose dedication and passion brought this story to life. Produced by Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao, ‘Laapataa Ladies’ is an intriguing blend of comedy and social commentary, focusing on themes of identity, societal expectations, and the roles of women in traditional Indian settings. the film revolves around the lives of two women who go missing on a train shortly after their weddings. This offbeat and humorous tale explores the chaos, confusion, and surprising twists that unfold as a frantic search is launched to find these women.
