Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao may have parted ways, but they continue to work together to raise their son, Azad Rao Khan. In a recent conversation with Kareena Kapoor on the chat show What Women Want, Kiran shared her thoughts on co-parenting, describing it as a bit ‘tricky,’ especially given Aamir’s busy schedule.
Kiran explained, “It is tricky in that he is a very, very busy father, and honestly, even when we were married, I was doing a lot of the actual primary parenting. Once we got separated and then divorced, I think Aamir also realized how much he would need to factor that into his life.” She noted that while living together made parenting easier, it now requires a more conscious effort for Aamir to make time for Azad.
Despite the challenges, Kiran feels more at ease leaving Azad with Aamir, saying that co-parenting has become smoother as Aamir has become much more involved and conscious. However, she humorously pointed out that Aamir still struggles with school-related matters. “Only Aamir knows nothing about school. I think it is a majority of a dad’s problem. They are like, ‘Don’t ask me about school. I will do whatever else,’” Kiran remarked.

Discussing her experience as a single parent, Kiran said that it hasn’t been too difficult, as Azad is a good kid. She expressed, “I have had only good days. Azad is a good kid. Because it has been just him and me in some ways, because I am a single mum for so long, we know each other quite well. The great thing about being a single mom is that you build a great connection with your kid. We are each other’s support system. Whenever I am low, there is nothing more I want than just to hang out with him, and I can tell him also, ‘Listen, I am really feeling down.’”
Kiran praised Azad’s empathetic nature and shared a light-hearted moment about his sense of humor, saying, “He makes me laugh like crazy.”
Aamir Khan and Kiran Rao were married in 2005 and welcomed their son Azad in 2011. They divorced in 2021. Aamir also has two other children, son Junaid Khan and daughter Ira Khan, from his first marriage to Reena Dutta, which ended in 2002 after 16 years.
