Bhumi Pednekar: My father was completely against me entering the film industry | – Times of India

Actress Bhumi Pednekar made a stunning appearance at the International Film Festival of India (IFFI) 2024 in Goa. While on a panel discussion, the star shared insights into her Bollywood career. During the chat, she not only spoke about her breakout role in ‘Dum Laga Ke Haisha‘, but also touched upon the evolving dynamics of the film industry. With the actress getting ready to celebrate her 10 years in the industry, she made a surprise revelation that her father, in particular had his reservations about her joining films.
Offering a candid look back at her debut film, which challenged conventional norms and resonated deeply with audiences, Bhumi said, “I think Dum Laga Ke Haisha is a very special film, not just to me, but also because it connected so deeply with people. It’s still the first thing that they come and tell me.”

Further reflecting on breaking the mould with her role, she added, “When the film happened, I was so pleasantly surprised because I was a Hindi film heroine, in a Yash Raj movie, who is not gonna look like any of the girls that they have cast in their films before. I wondered how am I gonna become a female lead. But I fortunately became an actor in a time where the way I looked was secondary and what I gave on screen was primary. And I’m so, so fortunate to have had all these opportunities and just the platform.

Bhumi also opened up about her upbringing and how being raised in a liberal household, instilled ambition and resilience in her. “It was just my sister and me, and we were never told, ki tumhe bade hoke shaadi karni hai (you have to grow up and get married). We were always asked about our career goals and ambitions,” she shared. However, stepping into the competitive world exposed her to the raw realities. She said, “I did not realize that there was such sexism in our society till I actually stepped out.”
Bhumi also opened up about her father’s initial apprehension about her joining the film industry. “My father was completely against the fact that I’m going to enter the films. He wondered how he could send me into such a world. But I think he understands now that I feel protected because of the people I’ve worked with,” she said, acknowledging the filmmakers, co-actors, and producers who created a safe and supportive environment for her.
On the work front, Bhumi will be seen next in ‘Meri Patni Ka’ remake, which is scheduled for release in 2025.
