Pune: The Pimpri Chinchwad crime branch on Sunday arrested Shekhar Jadhav (25), a history-sheeter who had been absconding after allegedly opening fire at a police team on May 16.A crime branch team led by inspector Sanjay Chavan apprehended Jadhav from Dighi and recovered a country-made pistol from his possession. Police said Jadhav has more than 70 theft cases registered against him.On May 13, a firing incident was reported in Dighi after Jadhav and his accomplice allegedly fired at a rival criminal following a heated argument. A case of attempted murder was registered against Jadhav at the Dighi police station, after which he went into hiding.On May 16, the crime branch received information that Jadhav was near Ranjangaon.Assistant inspector (API) Gorakshnath Balwadkar and his team rushed to the location. According to police, Jadhav and his accomplice attempted to flee on a motorcycle after spotting the police team. When they reached Sonesangvi village, Jadhav abandoned the motorcycle near an eatery and ran towards a sugar cane field. The police team pursued them.During the chase, Jadhav’s accomplice allegedly fired two rounds at the police in an attempt to evade arrest. Balwadkar retaliated by firing four rounds from his service weapon in self-defence. Following the incident, a separate case of attempted murder was registered against Jadhav and his accomplice with the Dighi police.Chavan said the crime branch team had travelled to Hingoli, Nanded and Latur districts in search of Jadhav. “On Sunday, we received information that he had returned to Dighi. Based on the tip-off, we arrested him and handed him over to the Dighi police for further investigation,” Chavan said.
