Engineering Exam Postponed after students, youth congress, NSUI protest

Pune: Savitribai Phule Pune University has postponed the engineering semester ending exams scheduled to begin on May 20 to May 26 after students, led by the National Students’ Union of India and Youth Congress staged a protest on Tuesday.Akshay Jain, head of the media department for the Youth Congress, said many students were yet to receive their re-evaluation results and yet the university had scheduled the exam from May 20. The Bombay high court on Monday had directed SPPU to accept the exam forms and allow 771 students from its affiliated engineering colleges in Pune, Ahilyanagar and Nashik to appear for the third and fourth-year exams starting May 20 and students demanded time to prepare for it.Rajendra Talware, director of examination and evaluation at the university, however denied the claim that none of the re-evaluation results are out. “Majority are already out. Only those who applied late or were not satisfied with the result are pending. However, considering the interest of students, we have postponed the engineering exams to May 26.”Lapses committee formed Denying any malpractice or paper-leak in the direct tax law exam held on May 15, Talware said that the lapses committee has been formed to look into the objections raised by students. “The objection was that all the questions came verbatim from a single book. It is not a case of paper leak. The lapses committee will look into the issue and submit its recommendations based on which we will act. We want to ensure that due diligence is followed by the paper setters,” said Talware.
