KEM MARD opposes move to rename medical school | Mumbai News – The Times of India

Mumbai: Resident doctors of BMC-run King Edward Memorial Hospital (KEM) in Parel on Saturday opposed the proposed renaming of the institution and instead sought “meaningful reforms that improve patient care and doctors’ welfare”.The civic health committee on Friday passed a proposal to rename KEM Hospital to ‘Kaushalyashreshtha Ekalavya Memorial (KEM) Hospital’. The proposal will have to be cleared by the municipal commissioner before going to the BMC general body for final approval. On Saturday, members of the KEM Hospital’s Maharashtra Association of Resident Doctors (MARD) said, “Renaming a legacy institution does not address the real challenges faced by the hospital.”They said that at a time when resident doctors continue to face pressing concerns such as inadequate hostel infrastructure, frequent lift breakdowns and irregular stipend disbursement, the focus must remain on strengthening healthcare systems and improving working conditions. “KEM is a globally respected institution, and its name carries decades of trust, service and excellence. This legacy must be preserved,” the KEM MARD members said.
