FIR against 4 docs, 2 nurses for baby’s death by negligence | Pune News – The Times of India
Pune: The Sahakarnagar police on Thursday registered a case against four paediatricians and two nurses of Chinmay Nursing Home in Navi Peth for causing death by negligence and cheating in connection with the demise of an 11-month-old female infant, last year. The infant was admitted to the nursing home on May 22, 2025, after bouts of vomiting. She died during treatment around midnight. The girl’s father (34) is a lawyer in Dhankawadi. He filed a complaint with the Sahakarnagar police and alleged his daughter had died due to negligence by the doctors and nurses at the nursing home.Based on a Sassoon hospital committee report, the Sahakarnagar police on Thursday registered a case under sections 106 (causing death by negligence), 336 (forgery), 318 (cheating), 228 (fabricating false evidence) and 3 (5) (common intention) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita as well as relevant sections of the Maharashtra Medical Practitioners Act. FIRs have been filed, but no arrests have been made in the matter.Dr Mukund Sangamnerkar of Chinmay Nursing Home said, “Our conclusion is we did everything possible to save the child. She was severely dehydrated. A day before she was brought to us, she weighed 8.5 kg. She lost 1.5 kg within a day. The family had visited multiple hospitals before coming to us. We did not refer them away, but started treatment immediately. The baby’s haemoglobin was in excess due to severe water loss and was leading to blood clotting. She was admitted to our clinic for only four hours. My team of doctors and I tried everything within that short span of time. Unfortunately, she died. We suggested the family conduct a post-mortem, which they refused. They gave us in writing that they did not have any complains with us. I do not know what happened after they left. I have been a paediatrician since 1980. The law will take its course, but I do believe we are not at fault in the case.”An officer from the Talegaon Dabhade police said that according the complainant, he took his daughter to the Chinmay Nursing Home since she was vomiting. A doctor on duty there told him to admit the baby as her body had lost a lot of water. He took a video of her and shared it with Sangamnerkar, starting the treatment as per his instructions. The doctors administered saline to the girl. Later, they sent the complainant to a lab with her blood samples. They also administered injections through the saline tube.“Around 9 pm, the complainant was informed that his daughter’s reports were normal. He was told that if the child vomited again, she would have to be shifted to another hospital with an ICU. The complainant claimed that the child vomited again around 10 pm. Instead of shifting her, the doctors administered an injection,” the officer said.He said the girl died around midnight. The hospital informed the Vishrambaug police, who suggested a post-mortem. However, the complainant refused. He obtained CCTV camera footage from the hospital later. “The father alleged that the CCTV camera footage showed one of the doctors hiding his daughter’s file in another ward. He also made changes in the register and in his infant’s reports,” he said. The officer said the hospital allegedly mentioned a wrong cause of death and an incorrect time on the death certificate of the child. The complainant filed an application of medical negligence by the doctors and nurses with the Sahakarnagar police. It was sent to the Sassoon hospital committee, which studied it. “The committee report said the patient was not monitored properly and the treatment was not as per norms,” the officer said.He said the police have registered the case and investigations are on.
