PMC plans flyover or grade separator at Ambedkar Chowk on Karve Road to ease congestion | Pune News – The Times of India

Pune:The PMC will conduct a detailed survey to check the feasibility of constructing a flyover or a grade separator at Ambedkar Chowk on Karve Road in the Karvenagar area to ease traffic congestion. There is a plan to appoint an agency to study the existing movement of vehicles at the junction, catering to the traffic going towards Warje Bypass Chowk, and the availability of space to construct a flyover or a grade separator. Based on the findings, the civic administration will decide between a flyover and a grade separator. A source said the administration would settle for a flyover if feasible, considering the existing traffic situation. An official of Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) said the purpose of appointing a consultant was proper designing and planning of the flyover or the grade separator as well as the traffic management. “The administration is yet to work out the cost of the flyover project because the proposal is at the stage of study,” he said.If the feasibility study permits, this would be the second flyover on Karve Road in the Karvenagar area. The PMC had constructed a flyover ahead of Dahanukar Colony Chowk a few years ago to eliminate congestionRegular commuters said the flyover would certainly help ease traffic movement. Sandip Shinde, a resident of the area, said, “Two canal roads originate from Ambedkar chowk. One small road travels towards Warje naka, while another connects the Warje water works. The entire area of Ambedkar Chowk witnesses a lot of vehicular movement. The administration should come out with a proper design of a flyover or a grade separator.Atul Soman, another resident, said besides constructing a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk, the administration should streamline the traffic from Ambedkar Chowk towards the bypass. “Encroachments and illegal parking hamper the traffic flow. The situation would become very critical after the Metro and flyover works start in the area,” Soman said.Officials from the PMC said planning a flyover at Ambedkar Chowk would be challenging because a new elevated Metro line till Warje was approved recently. It would cross the Ambedkar Chowk. The PMC will have to design the flyover considering the Metro’s alignments.
