Pune: Shaheed Diwas was observed on Monday at freedom fighter Shivaram Rajguru’s birthplace in Rajgurunagar, marking his martyrdom along with that of Bhagat Singh and Sukhdev.The British executed the three young revolutionaries at Lahore Central Jail on March 23, 1931, impacting India’s ongoing struggle for freedom.People from all walks of life — including students, local residents and officials — gathered in large numbers to pay homage at Rajguru’s ancestral home. Floral tributes were offered and patriotic slogans filled the air, as visitors remembered the courage and sacrifice of the martyrs.Additionally, the room where Rajguru was born reopened on Monday. It had been under renovation for the last few months. The freedom fighter’s preserved ashes were again put on display in the room and made accessible to the public.Secretary of Hutatma Rajguru Smarak Samiti Sushil Manjre told TOI: “As many as 500 people from various places, including Punjab, gathered to pay tribute. This time, a blackout for a minute was scheduled in the evening in the town. A bike rally was organised. We also maintained a minute of silence to remember our leader.”“The observance held through the day served as a reminder of the sacrifices made for India’s independence. It was meant to inspire the younger generations to uphold the values of courage and patriotism,” he added.Many attendees expressed pride in being associated with the land of a national hero. They urged authorities to further develop the site as a place of historical importance.
