Lisa Marie Presley, the late daughter of legend Elvis Presley, made a rather surprising revelation in her posthumous memoir, ‘From Here to the Great Unknown’, involving the loss of her son, Benjamin Keough.
In her book, completed by her actress daughter Riley Keough, Lisa revealed that she kept Benjamin’s body at her Los Angeles home for two months after he tragically died by suicide in 2020 at the age of 27.She also revealed the great lengths she went to keep his body preserved as she grappled with the grief.
“My house has a separate casitas bedroom, and I kept Ben Ben in there for two months,” Presley wrote. “There is no law in the state of California that you have to bury someone immediately. I found a very empathetic funeral home owner… She said, ‘We’ll bring Ben Ben to you. You can have him there.’”Presley explained that it was crucial for her to have ample time to say goodbye to her son, much like she did with her father, Elvis Presley, after his sudden death when she was just nine years old. “Having my dad in the house after he died was incredibly helpful because I could go and spend time with him and talk to him,” she wrote.
To preserve the mortal remains, Benjamin’s body was kept on dry ice and the room was reportedly kept at a temperature of 55 degrees, Presley revealed. She also noted how she struggled on deciding where she should lay him to rest – Hawaii or Graceland. “I got so used to him, caring for him and keeping him there,” she wrote.
She went on to acknowledge the shock others may feel with the idea of keeping a body at home for extended periods of time. She said, “I think it would scare the living f***ing piss out of anybody else to have their son there like that. But not me.”
Presley felt fortunate to be able to delay Benjamin’s burial, allowing her more time to come to terms with his sudden death. The family eventually held a funeral for Benjamin in Malibu and later laid him to rest at Graceland, alongside his grandfather, Elvis Presley.
In a 2022 interview with People, Lisa Marie opened up about how her son’s death had “destroyed” her but that she had to “keep going for my girls.”
Benjamin’s death took a toll on the family. Even sister Riley expressed her grief in a social media post that read, “Not an hour goes by where I don’t think of you and miss you. It’s been two years today since you left and I still can’t believe you’re not here.”
